Leadership Changes at German Competition Authority

04.03.2025 | German competition authority

The German competition authority announces key leadership changes effective March 1, 2025, impacting decision divisions and public procurement oversight.

Effective March 1, 2025, the German competition authority, known as Bundeskartellamt, will undergo significant leadership changes within its decision divisions. Eva-Maria Schulze, previously the Head of the 5th Decision Division, will transition to lead the 1st Public Procurement Tribunal.

Christian Ewald will take over as the Head of the 5th Decision Division. In a unique arrangement, he will also serve in an interim capacity as the Head of the 8th Decision Division, managing dual responsibilities during this transition period.

The Bundeskartellamt's decision divisions play a crucial role in enforcing competition law, overseeing merger control, and addressing abuse of dominance cases. Additionally, they handle administrative proceedings, including sector inquiries, either on their own initiative or upon request. The 10th and 12th Decision Divisions specifically focus on prosecuting cartel offenses across various sectors, while the Public Procurement Tribunals are tasked with reviewing public contract awards.

This restructuring aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Bundeskartellamt in its regulatory functions, ensuring robust oversight of competition and procurement processes in Germany.
