Rema 1000 Fined for Misleading Information in Merger Review

09.06.2025 | Danish competition authority

Rema 1000 has been fined 40,000 kroner by the Danish competition authority for providing incorrect and incomplete information during its merger review with parts of Aldi Denmark.

The Danish competition authority has imposed a fine of 40,000 kroner on Rema 1000 for submitting incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information during the merger notification process with parts of Aldi Denmark in spring 2023.

According to Tine Rønde, Deputy Director of the Competition and Consumer Authority, it is crucial for companies to provide accurate and complete information within tight deadlines to assess how a merger affects competition. In this case, Rema 1000 failed to include details about a store project in Brøndby, for which they had received a building permit just a week prior to the merger notification.

Despite the missing information, the Competition and Consumer Authority determined that it did not impact the outcome of the merger case. The fine was calculated based on the principles applicable at the time of the violation.

The merger between Rema 1000 and parts of Aldi Denmark was approved by the Competition Council on August 30, 2023, after Rema 1000 agreed to divest stores in Bjerringbro, Hadsund, and Væggerløse.
