REWE International AG has officially notified the Austrian Federal Competition Authority (AFCA) regarding its planned acquisition of 21 UNIMARKT stores located across various regions in Austria. This notification marks the beginning of a regulatory review process to assess the competitive implications of the merger.
The AFCA is tasked with analyzing the competitive situation in the relevant market and has until January 15, 2026, to complete its examination. Following this, an information document will be published on January 16, 2026. If necessary, REWE may request a two-week extension for the examination period.
Stakeholders whose legal or economic interests may be affected by the merger are encouraged to submit written statements to the AFCA. If the review identifies no competition issues at specific locations, the acquisition may be cleared. However, should any competition concerns arise, the merger could undergo a Phase I investigation, and if unresolved, may escalate to a Phase II examination by the Cartel Court.
