The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has released its latest monitoring report on the UK road fuel market, analyzing the impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East on fuel prices. The report highlights that while wholesale fuel prices have decreased, retail prices at the pump remain significantly higher than pre-conflict levels.
In its previous report from June, the CMA noted a rapid increase in wholesale fuel costs, which were subsequently passed on to consumers through higher retail prices. The latest findings indicate that although there was a drop in wholesale prices in June, retailers did not actively adjust their pricing strategies to reflect these changes, raising concerns about the effectiveness of competition in the market.
The CMA's analysis suggests that many retailers are employing passive pricing strategies, which contribute to sustained high profit margins. Some retailers failed to promptly pass on reductions in wholesale diesel prices to consumers, which could have increased competitive pressure among retailers.
Looking ahead, the CMA plans to conduct a more detailed review in the autumn, focusing on retailers' pricing strategies and the timely reflection of wholesale price changes in retail prices. The goal is to ensure that consumers are paying fair prices for fuel across different regions.
Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasized the importance of monitoring prices and margins closely, stating that any reductions in wholesale prices should be fully passed on to drivers. The CMA also highlighted the role of Fuel Finder, a service designed to help consumers compare fuel prices and increase competition among retailers.
Fuel Finder has seen significant progress, with approximately 97% of UK petrol stations registered with the scheme. The CMA has been actively enforcing compliance with Fuel Finder regulations, ensuring that retailers are registered and providing accurate price information to consumers.
