The Greek Competition Authority has announced the start of mapping the competitive conditions in the food value chain. This investigation follows previous inquiries into specific food products such as milk, yogurt, and feta, as well as factors affecting the food value chain, including animal feed and veterinary pharmaceuticals.

The aim is to capture a complete picture of competition across the agri-food sector, analyzing conditions at all stages of the value chain, including agricultural production, food processing, and trade.

This issue is particularly relevant given the recent increases in food prices and inflation trends. The analysis will help identify distortions that may arise from limited competition and deeper structural problems within the Greek economy.

Food price developments may not solely be determined by competitive dynamics, necessitating an evaluation of broader economic factors. The investigation will utilize multiple indicators to assess market structure and performance, incorporating both static and dynamic aspects, as well as data at the enterprise and sector levels.

Mapping and sector studies serve as crucial analytical tools for the Competition Authority to identify and analyze potential issues within a specific sector, independent of merger control processes or investigations into anticompetitive behavior, such as collusion or abuse of dominance.

The goal of conducting and publishing these investigations is to enhance dialogue with all involved public and private stakeholders regarding competition policy in Greece and potentially lead to proposals for regulatory interventions.

Results from the investigation are expected to be published in the third quarter of 2026.
