The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) is currently investigating possible anticompetitive practices in the international moving services sector in Spain. This investigation centers on allegations of market sharing, price fixing, and the exchange of sensitive commercial information among companies operating in this market.
The practices under scrutiny could affect door-to-door transportation of furniture and belongings, including both exports from Spain to other countries and imports from abroad, as well as transfers between third countries. Such actions may violate Article 1 of the Ley de Defensa de la Competencia (LDC) and Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFUE), in addition to potentially breaching a previous sanction resolution from September 6, 2016.
In 2016, the CNMC imposed fines on 15 moving companies for similar anticompetitive practices. Following this, the CNMC initiated a monitoring process to ensure compliance with the resolution. During this monitoring, new indications of restrictive competition behaviors were detected, prompting inspections at several companies' premises between October 20 and 23, 2025.
These inspections are a preliminary step in the investigation and do not imply any presumption of guilt or responsibility on the part of the companies involved. If evidence of prohibited practices is confirmed, the CNMC may initiate a sanctioning procedure.
The CNMC emphasizes that both agreements among competitors and non-compliance with its resolutions are considered serious violations of the LDC, which can result in fines of up to 10% of the total turnover of the infringing companies.
