The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) is intensively addressing consumer complaints and market problems associated with package delivery services. Recent disruptions in the operations of several package delivery companies have caused harm and frustration for consumers. The GVH is looking for solutions to these issues and may employ competition law tools, initiate expedited sector investigations, or launch competition supervision procedures if necessary.

In recent times, the GVH has received numerous consumer reports regarding the services of package delivery companies. The authority investigates every complaint and report it receives and will initiate proceedings if warranted. If a specific case falls outside its jurisdiction, it will refer it to the appropriate authority.

Csaba Balázs Rigó, the president of the national competition authority, stated, “We have also noticed the existing difficulties in package delivery and receipt during the pre-Christmas period. We strive to find a solution that will improve the situation for consumers in this regard.”

The GVH aims to map out the problems arising in the package delivery sector and propose solutions to eliminate them. The national competition authority is examining the underlying causes of market disruptions and their effects on consumers, and it will intervene decisively in market processes if there is suspicion of legal violations. This intervention may take the form of market analysis, expedited sector investigations, or competition supervision procedures that allow for sanctions.

The GVH also calls on the affected market players to fully comply with relevant competition law and consumer protection regulations, as well as rules regarding customer service and information.
