The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has launched an investigation into the online game platform Roblox due to concerns regarding the safety of minors using the service. The investigation will evaluate whether Roblox has implemented adequate measures to protect its young users.

Roblox is widely popular among children, attracting tens of millions of daily users globally. The platform has faced scrutiny over issues such as exposure to violent or explicit content, interactions with potentially harmful individuals, and the use of misleading techniques to encourage purchases. ACM has received multiple reports highlighting these concerns and has conducted a preliminary investigation, leading to the decision to pursue an official inquiry.

The focus of the investigation is on Roblox's compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates online platforms to ensure a high level of privacy and safety for minors. ACM, responsible for enforcing the DSA in the Netherlands, aims to determine if Roblox has fulfilled its obligations to protect minors from online abuse and deception.

The duration of the investigation is uncertain but is expected to last around 12 months, depending on its complexity. ACM may conclude that Roblox complies with the regulations; however, if violations are found, the authority could impose enforcement actions, including fines or binding instructions. Throughout the investigation, ACM will refrain from commenting on the case.

The DSA, effective from early 2024, aims to create a safer online environment for minors by requiring platforms to implement protective measures against harmful content. ACM oversees platforms operating in the Netherlands, including Roblox, and can address reports of violations from Dutch users, even if the platforms are based elsewhere.
