The Croatian competition authority (AZTN) has released findings from its 2024 market study on mixed goods retail, primarily focusing on food, beverages, and household hygiene products. The study surveyed 41 significant retailers, revealing a total revenue of €8.41 billion, marking an increase of €679 million (8.8%) compared to 2023.

Despite the overall revenue growth, the rate of increase has slowed down compared to the previous year, where a double-digit growth of 16.1% was recorded. This slowdown correlates with a decrease in the consumer price index for food and non-alcoholic beverages, indicating inflationary pressures may have influenced the nominal revenue growth.

The study also noted an increase in the number of retail outlets, totaling 5,266 in 2024, a 2.5% rise from 2023. Small stores showed the most significant growth, although the rate of increase was less pronounced than in the previous year.

Konzum plus remains the largest retailer with a market share of 20-30%, despite a slight decline in share. Lidl and Kaufland, both part of the Schwarz Group, also reported revenue growth, contributing to a combined market share of 20-30% for the group.

In terms of market concentration, the CR10 index increased to 87.8, indicating a slight rise in market asymmetry, while the CR5 index showed a minor decrease. The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) remains at 1,409, suggesting a relatively competitive market.

Regional variations in revenue growth were observed, with Zagreb leading in total revenue. The study also highlighted the dominance of supermarkets in the retail sector, accounting for 72% of total revenue, with online sales remaining insignificant.
