The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has expanded its financial education initiatives to include all Junior Cycle maths students. This initiative builds on previously developed resources for Junior Cycle Business Studies, Home Economics, and Leaving Certificate Applied.

The new materials are designed to make financial learning engaging and practical, utilizing various methodologies such as role play, case studies, games, quizzes, templates, and videos. The CCPC has created new videos focusing on VAT, interest on loans, and compound interest specifically for Junior Cycle Mathematics.

These resources have been developed in consultation with Oide and are aligned with the Junior Cycle mathematics specifications. They come with classroom-ready teaching materials that help students connect mathematical concepts with real-world financial decisions.

By embedding financial literacy within mathematics, the CCPC aims to ensure that all young people, regardless of their subject choices, engage with essential financial concepts. This initiative is crucial for helping students develop the skills needed to make informed financial decisions and become confident consumers.

Muriel Dolan, Deputy Director of Financial Education at CCPC, emphasized the importance of instilling good financial habits from an early age. She stated that connecting mathematical concepts with everyday financial decision-making helps students build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of the real-world applications of mathematics.

The CCPC's financial education resources are part of a broader effort to promote financial literacy in Ireland, aligning with the country's first National Financial Literacy Strategy. The maths videos can be accessed on the CCPC website.
