The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has achieved significant consumer compensation, totaling over 10 billion HUF since April 2020. The latest case involves the European operator of the online marketplace Temu, which is set to refund at least 882 million HUF to misled Hungarian consumers.

In addition to the refunds, Temu will pay a fine of 437 million HUF to the Hungarian central budget and has committed to implementing a comprehensive compliance program. Each affected consumer who made purchases on Temu's website or app between November 2023 and September 2024 will receive 2000 HUF in cash compensation.

A dedicated activation link will be sent to affected consumers via email, allowing them to provide their bank account details or relevant information for widely accepted alternative payment methods. If the total refunds to consumers do not reach 882 million HUF, the operating company of Temu will be required to pay the difference as a fine to the Hungarian central budget.

This case is not isolated; numerous large companies have provided consumer compensation due to GVH proceedings in recent years. Since April 2020, over 10 billion HUF in direct consumer compensation has been paid to Hungarian consumers from companies under investigation.

Last November, GVH concluded its investigation into About You, revealing that the company had misled consumers with deceptive promotions and applied psychological pressure. The operator of the popular online fashion portal acknowledged the violations and agreed to provide 1750 HUF compensation to hundreds of thousands of Hungarian consumers who made purchases between December 31, 2022, and December 31, 2024. The company began payments in March 2026, alongside a fine of 505 million HUF paid to the Hungarian central budget.

In February 2023, Wish committed to financially compensating around 100,000 to 150,000 consumers for a total of approximately 150 to 225 million HUF. By the end of January 2025, Wizz Air will refund thousands of consumers due to GVH's actions. In May 2024, GVH concluded its investigation into Eventim, resulting in compensation for over 80,000 consumers, totaling around 70 million HUF. In May 2021, eMAG agreed to a compensation package valued at approximately 4 billion HUF, with over 1 billion HUF allocated for direct consumer compensation.
