The German competition authority has mandated the Rethmann Group to notify future mergers for three years, marking the first application of a new regulation.

On November 21, 2025, the German competition authority, Bundeskartellamt, issued a decision requiring the Rethmann Group, which includes the waste management company Remondis, to notify future mergers in specific economic sectors before they are executed.

This decision represents the first application of a regulation introduced in 2021 and adjusted at the end of 2023. Under this regulation, companies can be obligated to notify mergers that typically do not fall under the notification requirement and thus would not be subject to a review of their competitive effects.
