The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is set to host a workshop on June 4, 2025, titled 'The Attention Economy: How Big Tech Firms Exploit Children and Hurt Families.' This event aims to explore the various ways in which large technology companies utilize addictive design features that can undermine parental authority and expose children to harmful content.
Key speakers at the workshop will include U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn and Katie Britt, along with FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson and Commissioners Melissa Holyoak and Mark R. Meador. Their insights will help frame the discussions around the responsibilities of tech firms in safeguarding children online.
The agenda will feature panel discussions focusing on the dangers children face in the digital landscape, potential actions the FTC can take to enhance online protections, age verification requirements, and the role of local communities in ensuring child safety online.
The workshop will be held at the FTC’s Constitution Center in Washington, D.C., starting at 9:00 am ET, and will also be available for online streaming. Interested participants must register to attend in person, and further details can be found on the FTC's event page.
