Italian Competition Authority fines FIGC for abusing dominant position in youth football competitions

30.06.2024 | Italian competition authority

The Italian Competition Authority imposed a fine of over EUR 4 million on the FIGC for abusing its dominant position in youth football competitions, restricting the activities of Sports Promotion Bodies in amateur football.

The Italian Competition Authority fined the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) over EUR 4 million for abusing its dominant position in the market for organizing competitive youth football competitions. The FIGC used exclusionary tactics to strengthen its dominance and limit the activities of Sports Promotion Bodies in the amateur football sector.

The FIGC's strategy involved not entering into required agreements with Sports Promotion Bodies, effectively blocking their access to the market and maintaining a monopoly position. Additionally, the FIGC misused its regulatory power by considering certain amateur activities as competitive, imposing restrictions on Amateur Sports Associations affiliated with the FIGC and their athletes.
