Greek Competition Commission Imposes Fine on Motor Oil Company for Obstructing Investigation

29.09.2024 | Greek competition authority

The Greek Competition Commission has fined Motor Oil (Hellas) Refineries for hindering an on-site inspection in the petroleum market, along with an individual, resulting in significant penalties.

The Greek Competition Commission imposed fines on Motor Oil (Hellas) Refineries and an individual for obstructing an on-site inspection in the broader petroleum market. The inspection was part of a self-initiated investigation by the General Directorate for Competition at various stages of refining, wholesale, and retail sales in the gasoline and diesel market.

During the inspection, both the company and the individual failed to actively cooperate, causing obstacles, delays, and difficulties. This behavior led to a lack of integrity and availability of the company's professional records, undermining the effectiveness of the inspection and violating the obligation of active and continuous cooperation with the appointed officials.

As a result, the Commission unanimously imposed a fine of €9.2 million on the company and €50,000 on the individual for breaching competition law.
