The European Commission has accepted commitments from Corning, a leading glass manufacturer, to ensure fair competition in the supply of Alkali-aluminosilicate glass (Alkali-AS Glass) used in handheld electronic devices. This decision follows a formal investigation initiated due to concerns that Corning's exclusive agreements with manufacturers may have distorted competition in the market.
Corning, known for its 'Gorilla Glass' brand, was found to hold a dominant position in the Alkali-AS Glass market, which includes two subtypes: lithium aluminosilicate glass (LAS Glass) and sodium aluminosilicate glass (NAS Glass). The Commission's preliminary assessment indicated that Corning's agreements with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and finishers could potentially exclude other producers from significant market segments.
To alleviate these concerns, Corning proposed several commitments, which were subsequently amended after market testing. Key commitments include waiving exclusive dealing clauses in current agreements, not requiring OEMs to purchase specific quantities of glass from Corning, and ensuring that finishers are not bound by purchasing requirements. These commitments will apply to both Alkali-AS Glass and Clear Glass Ceramics, a material expected to gain traction in the market.
The commitments will remain in effect for nine years and will be monitored by a trustee fluent in Chinese Mandarin. The Commission's decision aims to foster competition, ultimately benefiting consumers through lower prices and improved quality of cover glass products.
