Hungarian Competition Authority Launches Investigations into Dairy and Egg Markets

14.04.2025 | Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian competition authority has initiated expedited sector investigations into the domestic dairy and egg markets due to significant price fluctuations and increases.

On April 15, 2025, the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) announced the launch of two expedited sector investigations into the domestic dairy and egg markets. This decision was made public by GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó during a meeting of the Economic Committee of the National Assembly.

Rigó highlighted that the products under investigation are significant components of the average consumer basket in Hungary. Recently, there have been notable increases and fluctuations in consumer prices for these products, prompting the authority to take action to protect consumers from unlawful practices and excessive price hikes.

The expedited sector investigation is a procedure established under competition law to identify market problems when there are indications of distortion or restriction of competition, necessitating urgent intervention in the sector. The GVH will analyze information collected from market participants to uncover potential causes of competition distortion and take appropriate measures if necessary.

Following the completion of the information gathering and data analysis, the GVH will summarize the results of the expedited sector investigation in a public report. The authority has one month to prepare this report, which can be extended by an additional two months if justified.

In 2023, the GVH conducted two similar expedited sector investigations in the food market, one focusing on dairy products and the other on shelf-stable foods. The findings from these investigations led to several recommendations, including the establishment of an online price monitoring system, which will serve as a comparison point for the current dairy sector investigation.
