ERGO International AG has submitted a merger notification to the Competition Council regarding its acquisition of Gjensidige, impacting the non-life and health insurance sectors in the Baltic region.

07.01.2025 | Latvian competition authority

ERGO International AG, a Germany-based insurance provider, has announced its intention to acquire ADB Gjensidige, a Lithuanian company offering a wide range of non-life insurance products in the Baltic states. This merger is significant as both companies operate in overlapping markets, particularly in non-life and health insurance.

ERGO operates through its subsidiaries, providing various insurance services in Latvia, including medical expense insurance and liability insurance. Gjensidige, on the other hand, offers property insurance, travel insurance, and other non-life insurance products across the Baltic region.

The Competition Council (KP) is tasked with making a decision on the merger within one month of receiving the notification. If further investigation is required, this period may extend up to four months. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide their opinions on the merger's impact on competition by January 17, 2025.
