The CNMC has revised and adjusted the compensation that Correos should receive for providing the universal postal service in 2011 and 2012, resulting in an increase of almost 5 million euros per year.

Correos receives compensation for the additional cost (unfair financial burden) incurred in fulfilling these public service obligations.

The initial resolutions had quantified the unfair financial burden on Correos, considering the unit cost of Correos' reach mailboxes. With new information provided by Correos in April 2024, adjustments were made, positively impacting the compensation by 4.8 million euros in 2011 and 4.9 million euros in 2012.

The CNMC, after more than 10 years, now has a methodology approved by the Council of Ministers since June 2021 to verify the net cost and determine the unfair financial burden of the universal postal service. Recent reports recommend revisions for verifications from 2021 onwards.
