The National Anti-Scam Centre has released its Targeting Scams Report, indicating that Australians reported financial losses exceeding $2 billion due to scams in 2025. This figure represents a 7.8% increase from the previous year, despite a 29.7% reduction in total scam losses since the peak in 2022.
The report details that the top five scam types contributing to these losses were investment scams, payment re-direction scams, romance scams, phishing scams, and remote access scams, which together accounted for 60% of total losses. The report emphasizes the complex and evolving nature of scams, which are often resistant to simple solutions.
In response to the growing sophistication of scams, particularly those utilizing Artificial Intelligence, the Australian competition authority has called for enhanced collaboration among various stakeholders. This includes a recent endorsement of a Call to Action to Combat Fraud at the United Nations and Interpol Global Fraud Summit.
The report also highlights the importance of public participation in reporting scams, which aids in understanding and disrupting scam activities. The National Anti-Scam Centre has taken significant steps to disrupt scams, including the removal of thousands of scam websites and referrals to major tech companies for further investigation.
Despite the high losses, the report stresses that coordinated interventions are essential for combating scams effectively. The National Anti-Scam Centre continues to work with partners to strengthen efforts in scam prevention and disruption.
