Somia Azahaf Takes Helm as Director of ACM’s Consumer Department
Somia Azahaf has been appointed as the new Director of the Consumer Department at the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), effective August 1, 2026.

Somia Azahaf will begin her role as Director of the Consumer Department at the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) on August 1, 2026. In this position, she will provide strategic direction to a dynamic team focused on enforcing consumer protection rules in both online and offline markets.
ACM’s mission is to ensure that markets function effectively for all individuals and businesses. Under Ms. Azahaf's leadership, the Consumer Department will prioritize reliable consumer information and effective oversight to protect consumers. The department will also address unfair commercial practices reported by the public, collaborating with other European authorities as necessary.
Martijn Ridderbos, a Board Member of ACM, expressed enthusiasm about Ms. Azahaf's appointment, highlighting her extensive regulatory knowledge and real-world experience as assets to the organization. Ms. Azahaf herself emphasized her commitment to enhancing consumer protection, particularly in the context of digitalization and sustainability.
Before joining ACM, Ms. Azahaf served as Chief Compliance Officer at APG Groep NV and held various roles at the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets and other organizations. Her academic background includes studies in Dutch and European Law.
