On June 19, the Luxembourg competition authority, represented by non-governmental advisor Laura A. Méndez, took part in the opening roundtable of the 4th annual conference of the Academic Society for Competition Law (ASCOLA Swiss Chapter) held at the University of Zurich. The conference focused on the theme 'DACH-EU Competition Law '25'.
During the roundtable titled 'Breakfast with the Competition Authorities', Méndez shared the stage with notable figures including Laura Baudenbacher from the Swiss Competition Commission, Stefan Ruech from the Austrian Federal Competition Authority, Konrad Ost from the German Federal Cartel Office, and Ulla Schwager from the European Commission's DG COMP.
The discussion highlighted recent developments and priorities in competition law across different jurisdictions. Méndez presented a proposed bill aimed at introducing a merger control regime in Luxembourg, along with a recent referral request to the European Commission under Article 22 of the EU Merger Regulation.
Additionally, she outlined the authority's recent activities, including sector inquiries in the pharmaceutical and residential real estate sectors, new powers regarding online platform regulation, and ongoing collaboration with the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) to develop an AI-based digital assistant.
The Luxembourg intervention also addressed substantial institutional reforms following the implementation of the ECN+ directive in Luxembourg. The event underscored the importance of international dialogue and comparative analysis in shaping a modern and effective competition policy.
