The Danish competition authority, known as Konkurrence- og Forbrugerstyrelsen, has announced that Rema 1000 submitted misleading and incomplete information regarding its merger with parts of Aldi Denmark. This revelation came after Rema 1000 failed to disclose details about a store project in Brøndby, for which it had recently received a building permit.
Tine Rønde, the Deputy Director of the authority, emphasized the importance of accurate and timely information in merger cases to ensure that competition is not significantly hindered, which could harm consumers. The authority noted that the missing information should have been submitted at the time of the merger notification.
As a result of these findings, the authority has decided to proceed with imposing a fine on Rema 1000. However, they assessed that the missing details about the Brøndby store project did not affect the outcome of the merger decision.
On August 30, 2023, the competition council approved the merger between Rema 1000 and parts of Aldi Denmark, contingent upon Rema 1000's commitment to divest stores in Bjerringbro, Hadsund, and Væggerløse.
