The Autorité de la concurrence, responding to a request from the Economic Affairs Committee of the French Senate, has provided an analysis of the agricultural equipment sector, particularly tractors, which represent a significant portion of farm production costs in France.
Tractor prices have risen sharply in recent years, influenced by inflation and sector-specific factors such as increased power requirements and new standards. The authority emphasizes the need for careful assessment of any purchase incentives like subsidies to avoid exacerbating price increases.
The analysis reveals an oligopolistic upstream market dominated by four main manufacturers, which together hold nearly 90% of the market share. High barriers to entry and the risk of information exchange among competitors raise concerns about market competition.
In the downstream markets for tractor distribution and repair, inter-brand competition is generally satisfactory, but intra-brand competition is limited due to territorial exclusivity clauses. This restricts consumer choice and may lead to higher prices.
The Autorité calls for manufacturers to clarify dealer agreements and ensure that distributors are aware of their rights, particularly regarding passive sales, to enhance competition and prevent economic dependence.
