Telecommunications Statistics Reveal Market Concentration in Spain

The Spanish competition authority reports significant market concentration in the telecommunications sector, with major players dominating both fixed and mobile broadband lines.

The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has released its telecommunications statistics for February 2026, highlighting the ongoing concentration of market share among a few key operators.

In the fixed broadband sector, the total number of lines reached 19.63 million, with 56,344 new lines added in February alone. The penetration rate now stands at 39.6 lines per 100 inhabitants, an increase from 38.4 a year ago. Notably, fiber optic lines (FTTH) grew by 74,205, bringing the total to 17.9 million.

Movistar, Vodafone, and MASORANGE together accounted for 81.7% of the fixed broadband market. When including DIGI, this figure rises to 95.3%, indicating a highly concentrated market.

In the mobile sector, there were 62.54 million active lines, with a penetration of 126.2 lines per 100 inhabitants. The same three operators dominated, holding 86.9% of the mobile lines, and with DIGI included, the concentration reached 99%.

The report also noted a slight decline in fixed lines, which fell by 12,003 to 17.60 million. The number of ported fixed numbers decreased by 3.4% compared to the previous year.
