The Hungarian competition authority (GVH) has reported a significant decrease in inflation, with food prices dropping by an average of 1.1% over the past year. This decline is largely attributed to the competitive environment fostered by the GVH's online price monitoring system, which tracks prices of around 5,000 products across 140 categories.

In July 2026, consumer prices were only 1.2% higher than the previous year, marking the lowest inflation rate in a decade. Notably, food prices saw a remarkable decrease of 4.4% when excluding hospitality services. The GVH's system enhances price transparency and comparability, allowing consumers to save money and time during their purchases.

Several widely purchased food items experienced significant price reductions in July, including butter (down 14.1%), pork (down 13.1%), and fresh fruits (down 12.5%). The GVH's online price monitoring system, launched in March 2023, was designed to improve price transparency and competition among retailers, thereby helping to curb food inflation.

The system has expanded its product categories over time, now including 140 categories with over 5,000 products. It features a customizable shopping list and a map-based store filter to assist families in saving money and time during their summer shopping.
