On July 1, 2025, the Hungarian competition authority, known as GVH, announced the expansion of its online price monitoring system, which now includes a total of 142 product categories. This system allows consumers to compare prices of over 5,000 different food items and household and hygiene products from six major retail chains and three national drugstore networks.

The initiative, proposed by GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó in March 2023, aims to enhance price transparency and competition among retailers, which could help mitigate food inflation and reduce consumer prices. The online platform, accessible at www.arfigyelo.gvh.hu, was launched in collaboration with the government.

Since its inception, the system has undergone several expansions and functional improvements, including a customizable shopping list and a map-based store filter to assist families in saving money and time during their summer shopping trips.

The initial launch featured 62 food product categories, which have since grown to 100 by March 2025, and now includes various household and hygiene items. The GVH is also closely monitoring market processes and the behavior of food retail participants to protect Hungarian consumers and prevent anti-competitive collaborations.

Currently, the GVH is conducting investigations into food retail companies for suspected price-fixing and misleading advertising. Additionally, accelerated sector investigations are underway in the dairy and egg markets due to recent price fluctuations. The findings and recommendations from these investigations will be published soon.
