The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced its intention to designate Apple and Google as having 'strategic market status' (SMS) in their mobile platforms. This designation aims to foster competition and innovation within the UK app economy, which is the largest in Europe by revenue and developer count, contributing significantly to the UK’s GDP and job market.

The CMA's investigation revealed that Apple and Google effectively control the mobile platform market, with their systems running on nearly all UK mobile devices. Concerns raised include unpredictable app review processes, biased app store rankings, high commissions on in-app purchases, and restrictions on developers that may stifle innovation and limit consumer choice.

To address these issues, the CMA has outlined a roadmap for potential actions that focus on ensuring fair app review processes, allowing developers to direct users to alternative payment methods, and enhancing interoperability between devices. These measures are designed to create a more competitive environment that benefits both developers and consumers.

Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasized the importance of these actions for maintaining the UK’s position in global innovation. The CMA is seeking feedback on its proposals, with a final decision expected by October 2025. The agency aims to align its actions with international efforts to regulate similar market dynamics in the EU and US.
