The French competition authority, known as the Autorité de la concurrence, has released an opinion following a request from the French National Assembly to analyze competition in the talent representation sector within the film and audiovisual industry. This marks a significant examination of the sector, focusing on the competitive dynamics and the impact of market concentration.
Talent representation involves agents who advocate for artists, negotiating contracts and securing roles in various productions. The sector is currently dominated by two major agencies, Adéquat/Artmedia and UBBA, which has led to bottlenecks in the casting process and potential conflicts of interest. The Autorité's findings indicate that this concentration negatively affects service quality and artist opportunities.
To address these issues, the Autorité has proposed several recommendations. It suggests enhancing mechanisms for direct contact between artists and producers, updating the long-standing cap on agents' commissions, and improving transparency regarding agency contracts. These measures aim to foster competition and better inform artists about their rights and options within the sector.
