The European Commission has taken action against Eurofield SAS and its parent company Unanime Sport SAS, imposing a fine of around €172,000 for providing incomplete information during an antitrust investigation. This marks a significant enforcement step in the Commission's ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with competition laws.
The investigation began in June 2023 when the Commission requested information from Eurofield regarding its operations in the synthetic turf sector. Upon reviewing Eurofield's response, the Commission found indications of incompleteness, prompting a follow-up request in October 2023. Despite being made aware of the issues, Eurofield's subsequent reply remained incomplete.
In November 2024, the Commission opened an investigation into the procedural breach, leading to cooperation from the parties involved. They acknowledged their liability and provided the missing documents, which contributed to a reduction in the fine by 30% due to their proactive cooperation.
The fine imposed corresponds to 0.3% of the parties' combined total turnover, reflecting the seriousness of the infringement. The Commission emphasized the importance of accurate and complete responses to information requests, as they are crucial for effective antitrust investigations.
This case is notable as it is the first instance where the Commission has fined a company specifically for providing incomplete information in response to an antitrust investigation request. The ongoing investigation into the synthetic turf industry remains separate and continues to develop.
