ACCC Approves Joint Renewable Energy Procurement for Adelaide Councils

20.05.2025 | Australian competition authority

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has authorized several Adelaide councils to collaborate on purchasing renewable electricity, aiming to enhance public benefits while minimizing potential drawbacks.

On May 20, 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a final determination allowing six Adelaide councils to form a joint renewable electricity buying group. This group includes the City of Onkaparinga, City of Holdfast Bay, City of West Torrens, City of Salisbury, Town of Gawler, and City of Port Adelaide Enfield.

The councils will pool their electricity demand and engage in a collective procurement and negotiation process for the supply of electricity and renewable energy certificates from various renewable energy generators or providers. The ACCC believes that this collaborative approach is likely to yield significant public benefits.

In its assessment, the ACCC concluded that the anticipated public benefits from this joint procurement initiative would outweigh any potential public detriment. As a result, the ACCC has granted authorization for this arrangement until June 11, 2037.

For further details, interested parties can refer to the ACCC’s public register, specifically the entry for the City of Onkaparinga and others involved in this initiative.
