The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) is actively monitoring deceptive practices in the digital space, having initiated several proceedings against online fraud. In addition to enforcement actions, the GVH emphasizes the importance of prevention and is raising awareness about the dangers associated with online shopping.

Online shopping has become a part of daily life, but it comes with various risks such as fake online stores, hidden costs, and phishing emails. Consumers are advised to be cautious before making purchases. The GVH encourages consumers to compare offers carefully to find the best products or services.

Key tips for safe online shopping include ordering only from reputable and well-known websites, verifying contact information, and ensuring that the website's URL begins with 'https://' to confirm its legitimacy. Consumers have the right to withdraw from a purchase without justification during the period between ordering and delivery, with an additional 14 days to reconsider after receiving the product.

It is important to note that consumer protections may differ when ordering from EU member states or third countries. Customer reviews play a crucial role in online shopping, but they are not always reliable. Consumers should be wary of websites lacking reviews or those with numerous overly positive or poorly written comments.

The GVH is also focused on educating children about safe internet use, including the risks of online shopping. In January 2024, the GVH launched a Digital Awareness Program, which includes interactive presentations on online shopping dangers. The program is open for continuous registration, and resources for students and teachers are available on the GVH website.

Additionally, the GVH recognizes the growing popularity of artificial intelligence among young people and has launched a national competition for students in grades 5-8 to express their opinions and ideas about the future of AI through presentations, short videos, and posters.
