The Competition Bureau of Canada has announced its intention to block Nortera Foods' proposed acquisition of B&G Foods Canada’s Green Giant and Le Sieur brands. The Bureau's investigation revealed that the merger would likely lead to higher prices, fewer choices, and diminished competition in the wholesale grocery supply market.

Nortera, already a dominant player in the canned and frozen vegetable sector in Canada, would be merging with its only major national brand competitor. This consolidation is seen as harmful in an already concentrated market, where strong competition is essential for keeping prices affordable for consumers.

The Bureau has requested the Competition Tribunal to prevent the companies from finalizing the transaction until a decision is made. The Bureau emphasizes that effective merger control is crucial for protecting competition and ensuring that Canadians have access to a variety of affordable staple grocery items.

Interim Commissioner of Competition, Jeanne Pratt, stated that the investigation found the proposed transaction would weaken competition, leading to higher prices and fewer choices for essential grocery items. The final decision on this matter will be made by the Competition Tribunal, which functions similarly to a court under the Competition Act.
