CNMC Approves Qatar Sports Investments' Acquisition of World Padel Tour with Commitments

26.03.2024 | Spanish competition authority

The CNMC has approved Qatar Sports Investments' acquisition of World Padel Tour with commitments to ensure players' freedom to participate in other competitions.

Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) acquiring World Padel Tour (WPT) impacts the professional padel sports competition rights market. The merger of Premier Padel and WPT raises concerns about QSI's dominant position and potential restrictions on players participating in other tournaments. The CNMC approved the acquisition with commitments from QSI, allowing players to participate in Premier Padel tournaments in Spain without exclusivity clauses and ensuring existing contracts will not be reinstated post-merger. The commitments will last for three years, extendable for two more years.
