The 24th Annual Conference of the International Competition Network (ICN) was hosted by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in Edinburgh, Scotland, from May 7 to 9, 2025. The event saw participation from representatives across 90 jurisdictions, including business leaders, legal experts, and officials from international organizations.
The ICN is the largest association of competition authorities globally, providing a unique platform for members to exchange ideas and develop common solutions. With over 140 competition authorities as members, the ICN plays a crucial role in fostering international cooperation in competition law.
During the conference, participants engaged in plenary discussions and breakout sessions organized by ICN working groups. Topics included the role of competition in enhancing productivity, innovation, and growth, as well as a global overview of competition in digital markets. Keynote speakers included UK Minister for Labour Rights, Competition and Markets Justin Madders, FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera, and Gail Slater, head of the competition division at the US Department of Justice.
Andreas Mundt, President of the German Federal Cartel Office, handed over the chairmanship of the ICN to Andrea Marván, President of the Mexican Competition Authority. Mundt has been a pivotal figure in the ICN since its inception and has served as its chair since 2013, previously hosting the ICN annual conferences in Bonn in 2005 and Berlin in 2022.
Mundt expressed his gratitude for leading the ICN through challenging times, highlighting the organization's growth in membership and the breadth of topics addressed. He emphasized the strength of the ICN lies in the direct networking among its members and the focus on relevant issues.
On May 6, the CMA also hosted the ICN Technologist Forum, a closed event for technology experts from various authorities to discuss significant technological issues relevant to competition, including competition in AI and digital markets.
The ICN Annual Conference 2026 will be hosted by the Philippine Competition Commission. More information about the conference can be found on the conference website, and recordings of the plenary sessions are available on the CMA's YouTube page.
