The Slovak competition authority is closely watching reports about Tesco's possible departure from Central Europe, which may involve selling its retail network.

Recent media reports have suggested that Tesco may be considering leaving the Central European market, potentially involving the sale of its retail network to another business. Currently, these are only speculative reports, and the Slovak Competition Authority (PMÚ) has not received any formal notification regarding a concentration.

The PMÚ is monitoring the situation in the retail sector, which is characterized by the significant presence of several large retail chains. According to the information available to the PMÚ, there appears to be sufficient competitive pressure in the market at this time. Tesco has long been one of the largest players in the Slovak retail sector, ranking third in terms of revenue.

If Tesco were to be acquired by another business and the transaction fell under concentration control, the PMÚ would need to assess whether such a transaction could lead to a significant restriction of competition. The authority emphasizes that it would evaluate any potential transaction based on a detailed economic and legal analysis to protect effective competition for the benefit of consumers and a fair business environment.

In this context, the PMÚ also reminds stakeholders of its sectoral study conducted last year on the state of the food vertical in Slovakia.
