The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has filed a notice to appeal a ruling made by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in November 2025, which favored Meta Platforms, Inc. in a monopolization case. The appeal will be reviewed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The FTC has long alleged that Meta has illegally maintained a monopoly in the personal social networking services market through anticompetitive conduct. This includes acquiring significant competitive threats, specifically Instagram and WhatsApp, which the FTC argues has stifled competition in the industry.
Daniel Guarnera, the Director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, emphasized the importance of competition for the U.S. economy, stating that Meta's dominance and record profits have not been achieved through fair competition but rather through the acquisition of its competitors. The FTC is committed to continuing its fight against Meta to promote a competitive marketplace that benefits American consumers and businesses.
