Dina Kallay delivered a keynote address at the Concurrences Dinner, discussing the critical relationship between antitrust law and innovation. She highlighted the Antitrust Division's focus on promoting policies that encourage innovation, especially during 'Innovation Week.'
Kallay explained that competition and innovation are intertwined, with antitrust and intellectual property (IP) laws working together to foster a dynamic competitive environment. She emphasized the role of standards development organizations (SDOs) in promoting interoperability and innovation through F/RAND commitments.
The address also addressed concerns regarding collaborative industry standards that lack F/RAND assurances, which can lead to competitive risks and stifle innovation. Kallay pointed out the dangers of proprietary standards that do not adhere to F/RAND principles, as they can create monopolistic practices and hinder market entry for new innovators.
She concluded by reaffirming the Antitrust Division's commitment to monitoring competitive issues at the intersection of antitrust and IP, ensuring that innovation continues to thrive in the U.S. economy.
