The Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) has initiated a competition supervision procedure against Auchan Hungary Ltd. The authority suspects that the retail company, which operates 24 stores nationwide, engaged in unfair commercial practices related to its coupon promotions, potentially misleading consumers.

Between April 1, 2024, and February 12, 2025, Auchan advertised various discount coupons to consumers through national television channels. However, the GVH suspects that the company failed to disclose significant information, indicating that consumers could only obtain and use the coupons under certain conditions, such as meeting a minimum purchase amount and holding an active Trust Card.

The initiation of the competition supervision procedure does not imply that the company has committed a legal violation. The procedure aims to clarify the facts and prove the alleged infringement. The investigation is set to last three months, with the possibility of extending it twice for up to two months each, if justified.

The GVH emphasizes that businesses must ensure clear and comprehensive communication regarding the conditions of the services they offer, including various discounts and promotions. Companies should not assume that consumers will read fine print disclosures that may not be readily visible due to the nature of advertising.
