The Italian competition authority has concluded its investigation into Trenitalia, initiated in December 2025, regarding potential obstacles to passengers' rights to refunds for prolonged delays and cancellations.
Trenitalia was found to impose an unreasonable requirement on passengers seeking refunds, necessitating a prior declaration of travel waiver, which was not mandated by existing passenger rights regulations.
To address these issues, Trenitalia has committed to eliminating the requirement for a prior waiver declaration for all refund requests and enhancing existing channels for submitting refund claims.
Additionally, the company will create a dedicated webpage to provide essential information to users in case of disruptions to train services. Trenitalia is required to inform the competition authority of the actions taken to comply with these commitments within three months.
