On April 3, 2025, Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, visited the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) in Dublin to announce the launch of new guidelines for businesses in Ireland. These guidelines are designed to assist traders in understanding their obligations under the updated Consumer Rights Act 2022.
CCPC Chair Brian McHugh emphasized the importance of these guidelines, stating that while enforcement teams conduct inspections and investigations, it is equally crucial to support businesses in comprehending and adhering to the law. The guidelines are based on extensive data gathered from inspections, consumer reports, and ongoing market monitoring, aiming to clarify traders' responsibilities regarding consumer rights.
McHugh noted that the guidelines cover various sectors, providing essential information on common issues such as deliveries, deposits, and handling faulty goods or services. This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that consumers are well-protected and that businesses operate on a level playing field.
Commissioner McGrath highlighted the significance of consumer policy in improving lives and ensuring fair competition among businesses. He expressed his commitment to consumer protection as a top priority and stated that these guidelines represent a crucial step towards enhancing consumer rights in the marketplace.
During his visit, McGrath also engaged with McHugh to discuss additional topics, including e-commerce regulations and the CCPC's collaboration with EU consumer authorities on cross-border issues.
