The European Commission's DMA Unit has initiated a process to ensure that Google's Android platform allows for better interoperability with third-party AI services. This follows the preliminary findings sent to Google as part of the specification proceedings that began on January 27, 2026.
The draft measures aim to facilitate effective interaction between competing AI services and Android applications, enabling users to perform tasks such as sending emails or sharing photos using their preferred apps. Currently, Google restricts these functionalities primarily to its own AI services.
One of the key proposals includes allowing users to activate competing AI services using a custom 'wake word', enhancing user experience and choice. This move is expected to foster innovation among AI service providers, allowing them to create integrated experiences alongside Google's offerings, such as Gemini.
The Commission is seeking feedback from interested parties through a public consultation, which will remain open until May 13, 2026. A non-confidential summary of the findings and proposed measures is available for review on the consultation page.
