The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a warning to fuel retailers to fully pass on the recent fuel excise cuts by the Federal Government without delay. The excise cut, which amounts to approximately 5.7 cents per litre, follows a previous reduction of 26.3 cents per litre that took effect on April 1.
ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb emphasized the importance of these reductions being reflected in retail prices, stating that several retail sites have already lowered their prices in response to the initial cut. The ACCC is actively monitoring fuel prices across major cities and over 190 regional locations to ensure compliance.
In addition to monitoring price reductions, the ACCC has served notices to several businesses in South Australia, Western Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, requiring them to justify significant fuel surcharges imposed on deliveries to remote areas. The ACCC is concerned that some retailers may be using pricing strategies that mislead consumers about the actual cost of fuel.
Businesses are reminded that under Australian Consumer Law, they must not engage in misleading conduct regarding prices. The ACCC is investigating reports of unjustified surcharges and has given businesses three weeks to substantiate their claims regarding these additional costs. The commission is also urging consumers to report any concerns about excessive surcharges.
