The Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC) has initiated two sanctioning proceedings against the College of Dentists and Stomatologists of the 1st Region (COEM) and the General Council of Official Colleges of Dentists and Stomatologists of Spain. This action follows their failure to adhere to commitments made in 2021.
In 2019, the CNMC began an investigation after complaints from two dental clinics regarding certain statements and campaigns that could hinder their services. The case was resolved in 2021 with binding commitments from both organizations, which included obligations to communicate CNMC resolutions to their members and to remove controversial advertising from their websites.
However, on July 9, 2025, the CNMC found that the COEM had not removed two controversial campaigns from its website and failed to submit a required report on its employment services. Similarly, the General Council did not provide necessary reports on its communication activities or the publication of the CNMC resolution on its website.
As a result, the CNMC has opened these two sanctioning proceedings for non-compliance with commitments, although the initiation of these proceedings does not prejudge the final outcome of the investigation. A maximum period of three months is now set for the instruction and resolution of the case.
