The Spanish competition authority, CNMC, has recently approved several circulars that modify the compensation rates for electricity and gas networks. These changes aim to enhance regulatory certainty and promote investment in energy infrastructure.

One of the key circulars establishes a financial compensation rate of 6.58% for the regulatory period from 2026 to 2031. This rate represents a 100 basis point increase from the previous period and is one of the longest durations for such rates within the European Union.

Additionally, the CNMC has approved a circular that outlines the methodology for calculating compensation for electricity distribution activities. This methodology includes improvements aimed at increasing efficiency, enhancing quality, and reducing losses in the networks, while also incentivizing the electrification of the economy.

Furthermore, a circular was approved that modifies the methodology for electric transport compensation, setting specific values for investment and operational maintenance that will be used in the compensation calculations. These measures are designed to balance the need for investment in electricity networks with the economic sustainability of consumer tariffs in the context of ongoing decarbonization efforts.
