During the G7 Joint Competition Policy Makers & Enforcers Summit held in Tokyo, representatives from G7 member states and the European Commission convened to discuss competition law enforcement in the digital sector. The summit resulted in a joint declaration highlighting the importance of maintaining free competition, especially in rapidly evolving fields such as generative artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the metaverse.
Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, emphasized the benefits of international collaboration among competition authorities. He noted that sharing experiences and tools can enhance enforcement practices globally, particularly in the digital economy. Mundt pointed out that while smaller startups may offer innovative AI models, larger digital companies could leverage their advantages in data access and computing power, necessitating vigilance in regulating AI technologies.
In addition to the Digital Competition Communiqué, two significant documents were presented at the summit. The revised “Policy Makers Inventory,” developed with the OECD's support, provides insights into legislative approaches to competition in digital markets among G7 nations. The “Compendium” details the key activities of G7 competition authorities in the digital sector, continuing the format established during the British G7 presidency in 2021.
The Bundeskartellamt and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action previously hosted the 2022 G7 competition summit in Berlin, underscoring Germany's active role in shaping international competition policy.
