The Competition Council of Latvia (KP) has appointed Kārlis Piģēns, a current council member, as the acting chairperson. He will serve in this role until a new chairperson is selected through a competitive process by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Kārlis Piģēns has been a member of the KP since 2022 and has demonstrated his leadership skills during the absence of the previous chairperson. His primary focus will be to maintain the continuity of the council's operations while overseeing the enforcement and strengthening of competition law in Latvia.
Under Piģēns' leadership, the KP will continue to develop its IT solutions and other innovations. In 2025, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will conduct a comprehensive audit of the council's operations, assessing the effectiveness of Latvia's competition law instruments and identifying potential improvements.
This year, the KP will also begin providing consultations to public procurement entities on loss assessment calculations and methodologies, as well as offering advisory support for loss calculations related to legal claims.
The KP's activities have received positive recognition from international organizations, and in 2025, it will continue to collaborate within the European Competition Network (ECN), the International Competition Network (ICN), the OECD, and other regional cooperation formats in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
The council will continue its work with four members, including acting chairperson Kārlis Piģēns and council members Deniss Ščeulovs, Inese Druviete, and Ēriks Kristiāns Selga, who joined the KP in April 2024.
Kārlis Piģēns holds a doctorate in law and has prior experience in various regulatory and academic roles, including positions at the Public Utilities Commission, the Ministry of Economics, and Latvian universities.
On January 7 of this year, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to relieve Juri Gaiķis from his duties as chairperson, as he will now lead the Latvian Digital Health Center.
