Belgian Competition Authority Investigates AB InBev for Potential Antitrust Violations

15.01.2025 | Belgian competition authority

The Belgian Competition Authority has initiated formal proceedings against AB InBev following reports of potentially anti-competitive practices in the beer supply chain.

The Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) has opened an investigation into AB InBev, a global leader in beer production and distribution, due to concerns raised by various stakeholders in the beer supply chain.

Reports indicated that AB InBev may have engaged in practices related to the commercial conditions for supplying beer to wholesalers and horeca operators in Belgium. The Prosecutor General of the BCA found serious indications of possible violations of competition rules, specifically regarding abuses of dominant position and anticompetitive agreements.

The investigation is based on potential infringements of Article 102 and Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), as well as corresponding provisions in the Belgian Code of Economic Law (CEL). The BCA emphasizes that the opening of this investigation does not imply any predetermined outcome, and AB InBev will have the opportunity to participate fully in the proceedings.

Stakeholders are encouraged to report any suspected breaches of competition rules through the BCA’s secure reporting line, highlighting the authority's commitment to addressing anti-competitive practices in the market.
