The Monitor on the consumer experience by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) indicates that while many households are actively comparing energy contracts, they face significant challenges in doing so.
ACM reports that 59% of consumers feel overwhelmed by the number of suppliers, and 55% find it difficult to understand pricing due to limited offers. Additionally, 28% struggle to compare different energy contracts effectively. To address these issues, ACM is launching a study aimed at improving transparency and comparability in the energy market.
Manon Leijten, a board member of ACM, stresses the role of energy suppliers in providing clear and understandable information to help consumers make informed decisions. She highlights the need for easy comparisons as the energy transition progresses.
Furthermore, ACM points out that telemarketing practices are not conducive to helping consumers make informed choices, with 26% of households reporting pressure during unsolicited calls. ACM urges businesses to cease these practices.
The monitor also reveals that households connected to heat networks are less satisfied with their service compared to those using natural gas or electricity. ACM calls for better communication from heat suppliers regarding prices and services to enhance consumer confidence.
On a positive note, nearly half of consumers are taking steps to make their homes more sustainable, motivated by cost savings and environmental concerns. However, many face barriers, such as living in rental properties, which limits their ability to implement sustainability measures.
ACM continues to monitor energy prices and has noted significant price differences among suppliers, indicating that some model contracts are priced higher than comparable options from other suppliers.
