The President of UOKiK, Tomasz Chróstny, has criticized telecommunications operators P4 (Play) and Netia for their pricing practices that could mislead consumers. He emphasized the importance of clear communication regarding service costs, stating that consumers should be fully informed about what they are paying for and any conditions attached to those prices.
Both companies have been accused of presenting prices that include optional discounts, such as a 5 PLN monthly reduction for agreeing to marketing communications or opting for electronic invoices. This practice may lead consumers to believe they are paying a standard price, while in reality, the final cost could be significantly higher if they do not meet the conditions for the discounts.
Chróstny pointed out that the way prices are communicated—whether through advertisements or sales calls—often lacks clarity. Consumers may not be aware that the advertised price is conditional, and if they choose not to participate in the discount programs, they could end up paying 10 PLN more than expected.
He stressed that businesses must present clear and unconditional pricing. If they choose to advertise discounted prices, they are obligated to disclose the conditions and amounts of those discounts upfront. If the allegations are confirmed, P4 and Netia could face fines of up to 10% of their revenue.
UOKiK is also investigating other telecommunications companies, having already raised concerns with Vectra and Multimedia, and is conducting inquiries into Orange, CANAL+, T-Mobile, and Polkomtel (Plus network operator).
